EFC07 / European Fuel Cell 2007
Rome, 11-14 December | Frentani Conference Centre
260 participants from 32 Country

We would have liked to write a suitable preface to this second edition of the European Fuel Cell Conference, because we are proud and happy to have arrived here, but we will not. The chairman of the conference, our very dear friend Piero Lunghi, has passed away. We have decided to dedicate this conference to him and to introduce him to those who know him, and to those who never met him, through the letter that his sister Paola wrote for all of us to remember him by.

Angelo Moreno, Roberto Bove, Stefano Ubertini, Vanessa Rossi.

"I understood from the very beginning that my brother would have kept me on my toes.
At the hospital, when he first saw me, he asked if it was really necessary to bring me back home.
When Piero was in primary school, I realized that he could at least tolerate me. Indeed, as a present for Christmas, he gave me a kitchen for dolls, which he completely hand-painted, and made with the "traforo", as he liked constructing, creating, inventing.
He had already decided what to do as an adult. Between a brake test in the school corridor, which ended with his hands and feet stuck in the bathroom door, and an attempt to fly from the terrace, I understood that he felt the need to discover on his own how things work.
In secondary school, I used to follow him during his competitions of karate, on the tennis courts, in the ski resorts, and I was often captivated by his ability to memorize poems after only one reading, and by the passionate way he created his music when he played the piano and guitar...
He succeeded in everything he did, because he put in the same willingness, passion, determination.
In high school, I remember him with a chicken bone stuck in his throat. He had no time to go to the hospital, because he had to study. And at University, intoxicated by engine exhausts, because he did not use the mask, while performing his tests at FIAT.
He already knew then that there is a price to pay for science.
The University degree, the position as professor, the MIGA, the numerous projects and successes, the parties with his friends, the adventures he used to tell once back from his trips. The time when, in the United States, he had been eating milk and bread for 3 days because he spent all his money on a camera, and also that night in jail in China, when he forgot his visa.
A life too intense to be told in a few minutes...
A person too complex to be described in a few lines. Therefore, I will use some words from one of his manuscripts:
"I do not know how to start this story.
Maybe by talking a little bit about myself.
A bit introvert, a bit of a dreamer, ambitious, sensible, absent-minded, hyper-active, determined, maybe a bit agitated.
There are those who love music, those who love clubbing, those who love nature.
I love my work, I love thinking that I can somehow contribute to the education of students, who, one day, will be engineers, contribute to the development of companies and competencies in my field.
And I love success, I love my dreams and I am ambitious and I would like to go far in life"
